Thin Skin

Is your skin that thin?

So thin that the implication of something about you being stereotypical,

that you aren’t a vast ocean but rather a very.

shallow.

pond.

makes you reflexively expand the perceived slight;

create a monster of it

ingest it

make it who you are?

Is your skin that thin?

That you hear words,

amplify them in your head

throw them back

become a victim?

Is your skin that thin?

That you take things meant in jest

lighthearted jabs

innocent jokes

and twist them,

take offense,

fear them,

draw them out to be insults?

Your skin can’t possibly be that thin.

Because if it were then you wouldn’t take your own jokes,

bitter.

callused.

from a place of disgust,

and toss them at others

with such zeal and careless abandon.

Harping that words can’t hurt.
